Class Notes

Chatham University’s Office of Alumni Relations welcomes the chance to inform your fellow classmates/cohorts of the news in your life. Browse by class year to find news of your former classmates.

Also, take a moment to submit a class note of your own. Please note that the Alumni Relations staff reserves the right to edit your news for style, length and content.

***The Spring 2009 issue of the Chatham Recorder announced that the “Class Notes” would be published exclusively online. This new format allows your information to be updated more frequently and to be displayed for a longer period of time. We will no longer limit notes to even-year or odd-year classes, and your note will be organized according to Class Year. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the many class secretaries who volunteered over the years. Their dedicated hours to gathering their classmate’s entries were much appreciated!

Lois (Glazer) Michaels '53
"Visited Hanover, Germany where son Jay is working for WABCO and grandson Isaac, born on day of our 50th Reunion, and sister Hannah, are attending the International School. Spent winter in Sarasota where Milt and I enjoyed being entertained by members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in additon to long walks on the beach and swims in the Gulf of Mexico, celebrating 57 good years together. Appreciated support from Chatham University when my work for Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health and Rodef Shalom Congregation was acknowledged by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Pittsburgh Chapter. Celebrated grandson Jonathan's graduation from University of Pennsylvania, where his sister, Laura will be a Senior. Continue to plant and dig in my sensory garden which provides family and friends with a peaceful haven throughout the year and to be grateful for so many of life's blessings."

Maryanne writes, "I've written a beautiful, gentle, lovely book about a relationship with my cat. Every woman who lives alone with a cat, believes in animal therapy or finds entirely too much intensity everywhere needs this book for herself. And her friends would welcome it as a gift. The title? A Cat Is Better Than a Boyfriend Except for The Sex." Please visit www.acatisbetter.com

Judy (Pitasky) Markstein '56
Judy Pitasky Markstein ’56 continues to keep busy with husband Don in Sarasota, FL (winters) and in Williamstown, MA (summers). They enjoy cultural activities wherever they are. Williamstown offers great theater all summer and they enjoy the cool weather and looking out at the low-lying beautiful Berkshire Mountains. Tanglewood music with the Boston Symphony is less than an hour away. Sarasota offers opera, ballet, several theaters featuring equity actors, and an outstanding symphony orchestra. They look out on Sarasota Bay and enjoy the warm winters and summer-type activities. In March 2010, Judy was asked to host a cocktail party for Alumnae in the Sarasota area. A small group attended, including one alumna living in the same senior community in which Judy and Don live. They never realized that their neighbor, Betty Foster ’39 had attended Chatham (then Pennsylvania College for Women) 17 years earlier than Judy! The gathering at Don and Judy's apartment was fun and informative, with the Dean of Chatham College for Women Anne Skleder and Assistant VP for University Advancement Samantha Swift updating the guests on happenings at Chatham. One year earlier, Judy hosted a larger group at a luncheon at her residence, the Sarasota Bay Club. To everyone's surprise not named Barbara, there were seven alumnae from the same class, ALL named Barbara! Judy and Don's four children and their spouses, and their eleven grandchildren between 5 and 15 years old, visit them for a week’s vacation in Florida winters, and weekends in summer, driving to Williamstown from Boston; Madison, CT; Manhattan; and West Chester, PA. This summer, the Marksteins celebrated their third grandchild’s Bat Mitzvah in Madison, CT. Judy says, “Only eight more to go!” Judy and Don were married 50 years in May, but couldn’t find a time for all the family to come together for a long weekend to celebrate the anniversary until Labor Day, when the 21 person clan will be at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. Judy and Don say, “Wherever we live, we seem to be the only Marksteins in the phone book, and we would welcome visits in both Sarasota and Williamstown from Chatham classmates and friends!” Judy Pitasky Markstein '56 Williamstown, MA and Sarasota, FL

"We drove to Pittsburgh in May to attend Carl's 50th Reunion of his medical class at Pitt (the city is beautiful, especially viewed from the windows at LeMont on Mt. Washington) and went to admire the gorgeous Chatham campus before brunch at Lidia's. Banners were flying in the breeze, and we noticed lots of cars. Suddenly we realized: Graduation was in progress! Luckily, the traffic directors were cheerful and helpful. I felt very homesick. Last September we visited our daughter Alison, who is an assistant professor at the University of Oregon in Eugene. We picked up a shelf unit at Ikea and took off on a coastal tour. The scenery is breath-taking! After building the shelves for her living room, we enjoyed the Columbia River gorge. These United States are amazing!"

Elizabeth was delighted to here from her class secretary, Elizabeth Reed Dann, and hopes to catch up with her. Elizabeth works and travels a little and spends time with her husband, Pirie. She is also busy with her ceramic tile art and has an art exhibit this May and June of 2010, called Fragments.

"I got the message from our class secretary. In response I don't have anything new. I'm just getting older, working on several church committees and gettting ready for summer fun. My first granddaughter is graduating from high school and she will attend Slippery Rock University. I tried to interest her in Chatham but it didn't work. Maybe one of the others. I've exchanged notes with Yvonne Brooks Saxton and Janet Schmults, Lee. Give the class my best wishes. Happy Summer." -- Sonya Vernau

Carol (Crissey) Hill '56
Hi Everyone, since becoming a widow in January of 2009, Carol embarked on a new adventure. In mid June, Carol hopped in the car and drove by herself to Colorado Springs to see her grandson and his family and her granddaughter who was to marry a recent Air Force Academy graduate in July. Carol was in the Springs for two weeks and was blessed to have lunch with Dana Rose Pollitt '56. They had a wonderful, albeit brief, time catching up on their families. It was nice to have a change of pace. Carol is also very fortunate to have a loving church family in Florida as well as her two daughters.

"You know you're in trouble when you have to think, and then look up your class year! Aside from that typical senior moment, it's been a good year for me. Bill and I did a Caribbean cruise in April and look foward to a Baltic cruise for our 50th in August. I continue to play bridge weekly and walk every morning with my neighbor. Given the advanced age, that walk is cause for daily thanks. Good wishes to all the Class of 1956. See, I remembered!" -- Lori Hoskins

"Greetings, classmates. Sue (Alardice) Neff and husband, Sid, made a surprise visit to us in Lancaster. It was wonderful to renew old friendships and hear about the reunions I have missed. Dick and I are here in Normandy, France and enjoying a cool Spring. We will take the Eurostar train to London for the first time where Dick will attend the International Stamp Show and I will get to browse the museums. On our return, I will attend my 55th high school reunion in Kenmore, New York. Does it really seem that long ago? Warm regards to each one."

Betsy (Lytle) Suatoni '59
"Reunion 2009 was a blast! Those of us there missed those of you who weren't, terribly! Anyway, a good time was had to be sure. I'm still happily and actively being "grandma" (G.B. to the grands). The big news is that Frank and I celebrate our 50th in July, one day before Nancy and Arnie Eisenfeld celebrate theirs. I remember 50 years ago not being able to go to each others weddings. Trips to Alaska in May and to France in Oct. are in the wings. Frank still practices part time. I volunteer at Hospice, run into Yale for lectures and music, and adore my book discussion group. Cheers to all!"

Ruth McMillen was glad to catch up with former classmates at the Saturday luncheon on Reunion Weekend. My how the campus has changed! She thought everyone looked great after 50 years. "Greetings to all from Bradford, PA, where our winter was tremendous. Every big storm to hit the northeast missed us!! And our spring thus far has been wonderful as well. Unusual to say the least. A big event in our lives was the marriage in July '09 of our oldest son, Chad (born during my senior year at Chatham). All of our children(4)and grandchildren(11)were in attendance and his three children were in the wedding party. Truly a special event. Irv and I are well and keeping as busy as we want to be. Bridge continues to take an important role in our activities and I'm still singing in the church choir. We still travel in our motor home, but not as extensively this past year as previous ones. We have hopes of heading west again in the fall. One of my biggest events is the Missoula Children's Theatre workshop held in Bradford for the past 15 years and June of 2010 will once again see me at the helm! I was sorry to miss the reunion in the fall and do hope someday to get back on campus. My best to you all." -- Sandra Lyter

"Hello All, Just want to say that it was so nice to be back on the campus for reunion and to see the many changes! Also good to connect with a few classmates that I haven't seen since graduation. Dick and I celebrated our 50th in August and took our immediate family (14 of us now) on a cruise. Great to have everyone together since our 2 are settled in different parts of the country and now 1 married grandchild in another state. Traveling to see the grandkids is how we spend most of our travel time. We're thankful that we're both feeling well and enjoying our retirement by working part-time at things we enjoy doing!" -- Sally (Sarah Manfredi) Guthrie

"I have just returned from a 3-week visit to France to see my roommate: Mireille Dupre Hornstein. Mireille is retired from her career as principal of a middle school (and prior to that an English teacher). She read and re-read the Class of 1959 50th Reunion Memory Book and sends her regards to everyone. She and her husband live quietly in a small village. She often takes care of her two grandchildren. Mireille gallantly trooped with me to art exhibits and an “Origami” meeting in Paris. I took wonderful Chatham brochures with me to show how our University has blossomed. It is a marvel that our Chatham friendships can be strong after 50 years! My own news is that my Parkinson’s does not prevent me from teaching for CMU’s Osher program one day a week and thoroughly enjoying it."

"Life is good! I’m still working, teaching, traveling, working out, and running - - literally and figuratively, meaning that I’m running to the theatre, opera, symphony, and ballet. Pittsburgh has so many outstanding cultural events. And I am also flying - - to Albuquerque to visit my son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren (2 boys, although I just learned that I’m to be a grandmother again to a girl. What fun!) I also am flying to San Francisco to visit my daughter. Hope everyone is healthy and happy! Those classmates who attended our 50 year celebration in October, 2009, all looked healthy and happy."

Nancy wishes you were all here in Pittsburgh to be enjoying the gorgeous spring weather, after such a nasty winter. Chatham's campus is flowering and looking so beautiful. Nancy continues to enjoy semiretirement, playing some bridge (not much better than she did in the Chatham dorms!), and spending more time with friends and family. She's already looking forward to the big 50th reunion in 2012 - hope everyone will make plans and join the class of 1962 in Pittsburgh.

"Life continues to be good for me, if everyone keeps good health. Also helps to live in south Florida where she can enjoy sunny weather year round. My little grand-daughter Téa is 5 already and the light of her life. ICHAT is great for frequent visits when we play. Sometimes it is with her babies who she dresses and instructs. A few days a go, she had a pack of post-it notes and she proceeded to place "sold" stickers on toys, furniture, clothes, etc. Then she took them to her Mom (the "clerk") who told her the cost of each item. When I asked her what she paid, she was adding to come up with her final figure. Great imagination!" Three weeks ago I had total hip replacement with anterior approach. Doing well. How many class-mates have had joint replacements like hip or knee? This past year we traveled quite a bit: China in June, Rhodes Greece in September and South American cruise in January.

Nancy just spent a lovely visit with "little sister" Doe (Adamson) Moore ('66), in WA State. She also has reconnected with Bonnie (Dow) Taylor (roommate nancy Pierson's little sister) on visits to see her Mom, 97, in FL. Sandy Heisler had a lovely overnight visit with Judy Paulsen Webb (’63). She and Judy had been in touch through email and Christmas notes, but had not actually seen each other since they graduated from Chatham. Fortunately, they are exactly the same! "I want to send my best to all my classmates - and my disbelief that we are in our 50th high school reunion year, and only four years away from our 50th college reunion!! Hard to believe, and I hope many of us will be able to make that reunion!!! I think of slowing down work but can't seem to decide how yet, and continue to teach at one area school of social work, work part-time at a local outpatient mental clinic, and carry a small private practice. This summer I'm excited about going to Zambia, Africa with 'Communities Without Borders' to work for 16 days within an orphan community. In the past ten years this country has lost huge numbers of teachers, parents, government officials, general population, and other professionals, etc., from AIDS. I will be the first clinical social worker to join this teacher team for working there, and I have been trying to learn a wonderful therapeutic intervention for a workshop for their teachers and community leaders which was developed in Australia for working with vulnerable communities and children without re-traumatizing them. I hope this will be a methodology contribution they can culturally reshape and adapt to continue there with their children. This country's official language is English making it possible to connect more easily. I'm a bit nervous also but have gotten the typhoid shot, the malaria pills, etc., and am pretty ready. Back here in Boston I've been able to see Gwenn Gurnack for fun outings, enjoy her successes with creative poetry wrting and Haiko, and hope to visit Sue Haskell in NYC late this summer. May we all see each other in 2014!" Wendy Haskell Newton, Massachusetts 02458 haskellwendy@gmail.com

Business has been slower this past year but we have also now added summer conferences/camps to our duties. Needless to say - I am busy! My son Clay and daughter-in-law Mandy are in Raleigh, NC. Mandy now a district manager for the Limited stores and Clay has a new job as a consultant for a credit risk anaylsis company. They are having a great time. "Semi-retired! Laid off in 2008, worked contract off and on in 2009. Frank & I traveled to Ecuador for 3 weeks end of 2009. What a fabulous country, so many varied ecosystems and a week in the Galapagos Islands to top it off. Now volunteering at the Denver Zoo and working 3 days a week contract. It's a perfect semi-retirement, now if I could find some time to paint!"

"I am enjoying retirement, keeping busy with exercise, yoga, golf, painting, and keeping tabs on my family. We are now able to spend more time at our beach house. Two of my children are in California, so alot of our travel is to the west coast. My daughter has one son and another on the way. She continues to work as an ICU nurse and as a legal nurse consultant. My son and his fiance are moving to San Francisco in June to begin his fellowship at UCSF in pediatric oncology. "Having spent half of the last three years in Nepal teaching I will return this year as I have reluctantly concluded that my efforts have little real impact. It took learning Nepali and 18 years of traveling back and forth to come to understand why Nepal has potential, but has made so little progress. As one of my friends who was there with the UN observed, "it is the fourteenth century with cell phones." The reasons are complex and have much to do with the politics of privilege based on caste and corruption. I am writing a book on my experiences tentatively entitled, Dancing with Despair: Enchantment, Disappointment and Disillusionment in the Developing World. I taught a course on Nepal, Highs and Lows in the Himalayas at the Auburn University Osher Life Long Learning Institute this spring. If the students on campus were as interested and receptive as those who have retired I would still be in the college classroom. The questions were challenging and the enthusiasm gratifying among the life long learners! I took a couple of courses as well, one on the "removal" of the Native Americans from the south--heartbreaking. I will be spending some time in New England this summer as periodic trips to the northeast are critical to my need for periodic infusions of culture inculcated by the Arts course long ago. I love Tanglewood and Jacob's Pillow as well as Statford, Ontario's Shakespeare Festival. Christopher Plummer will be appearing as Prospero in The Tempest in July. My travel plans include Antarctica, my seventh continent in December. I can hardly believe that our 45 reunion looms! Linda Lanius Tomlins Turpin and I are planning to attend and hope to see you there..."

Dorothy Raymond Matsui is enjoying retirement after working 42+ years in libraries. "I have time to read and listen to many of the books I missed while concentrating on children's books. The garden in Redmond gets larger each year and I have joined a local garden club which visits inspiring gardens around Seattle. Yas is working part time as a consultant, and we travel some each year. Tim lives in Seattle and is doing multimedia work, mostly for non-profits, Johanna was married in 2008 and is working for a non-profit in Western Pennsylvania, and Jessie is enjoying her work as a hair stylist in Bellevue - she gets to meet a lot of interesting people. No grandchildren yet, but we have a few surrogates, who keep us active when they visit. Anyone visiting Western Washington, please let us know." Dottie Raymond Matsui d_matsui@yahoo.com

"I am still working full time in my pottery supply business "Carolina Clay Connection" here in Charlotte, NC. Not as much time for my own artwork, but I do teach classes there and enjoy being around my customers and students. Son Jordan is a world travler and has visited over 100 countries, just returning from a trip to western Africa and Timbuktu. He has both a British passport and American and has even visited North Korea (not sure why, I think just because he could). He has been a software engineer with Dell for many years. Daughter Amy also has the computer gene, going into web design and IT work. She lives in Charlotte. I have a new house as of three years ago, so anyone passing through is welcome. "Greetings from sunny Santa Barbara! After selling our business in 2004, my husband Jarry retired, and I got another job in an extended project publishing geologic maps. I retired wheen that finished last August, so I'm doing more traveling and learning to relax! I went through some hard times when my mother died last July and I dealt with the subsequent complex business of settling family estates. It sort of took the wind out of my sails, but I am slowly regaining momentum. Leading geology field trips for students and community groups is still on my plate, which involves hiking -- my favorite passtime. Last year I reconnected with Madeleine Teviotdale Bear who lives nearby, and we've had some fun times together. Most exciting has been the birth of two grandsons, one in Seattle with daughter Krista and the other in Winnipeg with daughter Shirley. They are both hard-working mothers, an aquatic ecologist and wildlife biologist respectively, who bring home the bacon while their husbands are earning PhD's. The babies are a joy in my life."

Dolores (Adamson) Moore '66
This past year was a good one for Mike and Dolores...no major health problems, fun and interesting travel in Europe, and rounding things out, some very good times with grandson Max who just turned six. In March, Mike and Dolores visited Barcelona which has to rank among the really unique urban centers of the world given its beautiful (and strange) architecture. They did the typical museum crawl (Picasso, Miro, Dali, etc.)and made sure to stand where Ferdinand and Isabella reputedly greeted Columbus, but the city's real beauty is in its layout and street after street of elegant buildings. While there, they rented an apartment (rather than stay in a hotel); doing so made us feel less like tourists and thankfully freed us from having to eat dinner at 9:00 p.m. They found the place via the Internet and were a bit nervous about taking the chance, but it turned out to be a very positive experience and one that they would recommend to others. Now, they're getting in shape for biking. Dolores and Mike have two trips planned this year: Loire Valley in a few weeks and back to Spain (Barcelona area) in September. She's not sure how much longer they'll be able to keep this up, but for now, it's a great way to travel and justifies all the food and wine temptations. On the family scene, there is both good and bad news to share. On January 15, Dolores and Mike unexpectedly lost a member of their family, Mike's elder son, John Parker Moore. He was only 49 and is greatly missed by all of the family. On a happier note, they have a wedding to look forward to this summer. Mike's younger son, Matthew (39), will be getting married in Connecticut in August...needless to say, they had just about given up hope :-). It will be nice to head back east for the occasion, spend a few days in NYC and satisfy some of the nostalgia that still overwhelms Dolores whenever she thinks of "home."

Janice (Thomas) Snyder '66
Janice Thomas Snyder reports that life is full and satisfying. She and her husband, Dick, celebrated their first anniversary last October at the wedding of Chatham roommate Brenda Hilken Rouse's daughter. It was a stunning event and a joy to reconnect with Brenda, Hannah Gilman and Marnie Elder Hodil. (Marnie's husband, Ray, graduated from the same Pittsburgh high school as Jan and her husband!) The Snyders moved into a home of their own in the fall and hope the housing market will rebound a bit to allow for the sale of Jan's previous home. Jan still works as a paralegal for a small bankruptcy firm but retirement or semi-retirement is on the horizon by the end of the year.

"Having just returned from two wonderful weeks in Spain (following some of Doe's tracks, I understand!) I must say it's been a good year. I continue to work as a lifeguard and swim teacher at our still-new YMCA, and at UMassBoston advising students at the beginning of each semester. But still have the flexibility of a retired person. Patty (Williamson) Baker '66
Patty Williamson Baker is trying to stay responsible and focused until retirement at the end of August. Then, it's sleeping late, reading, musing about what to do next. Son Andy married Whitney last summer in a beautiful setting at the Chicago Botanic Garden. They are settled in Chicago into jobs and a new condo. Ethan spends a couple of weekends a month with them, and with luck, with the grandparents. He's 12, smart, plays baseball and oboe. Daughter Abby and Chris celebrated Abby's 30th birthday with a hike to Machu Picchu, arriving the second day the site was open following severe flooding and mud slides. The adjacent town was a little short on food and beer, but it was a wonderful trip. They're living halfway between parents and Andy & Whitney. Don has started a phased retirement and now, at 60% time, working a normal work week. They hope to have a long break on Washington Island this fall. Then, after his full retirement next year, they will travel some before American Airlines cancels frequent flyer miles. *New email after July 1: patty.baker@sbcglobal.net. -- Patty Baker '66

2009 was not a good year for Catherine (St.Clair) McGregor. Her husband of 11 years, Bob, died in August after a 3 month battle with COPD & heart disease. Christmas & her birthday were spent in the NY area with her brother & family. She highly recommends Broadway show "A Little Night Music". Cathy continues to teach business classes, Office/Records Management & computer classes at Shasta Junior College. She has a daughter, Colleen, & 3 grandchildren. The girls are 7 & 6, & the boy is 3 years old, which are highlights for Cathy. Crazy Calififornia weather - (1 day hot, next day freezing) has provided her with a gardening challenge. Travel plans over the summer include an RV outing, local side museum trips & a possible drive to the ocean. She is looking forward to fall & the classroom, which always gives her comfort. If you are ever in California above Sacramento, let her know. Lots of historic places to visit in her Victorian town.

"My life is full to the brim with responsibilities of home, children and their families, work, book group, flute choir and dog training. Now that Stacey lives closer, we get to see her and Shaney (8) more often. It's a trip to NJ to see Ian, Jill and daughters Zoe (8) and Maia (7). Most recently, for Zoe's first communion. I continue to be employed full time as a production artist at Core Creative, an advertising agency with clients ranging from educators to heavy industry and plastics manufacturing . . . and, everything in between! In February, we added to our family with a black standard poodle boy. That makes three dogs and two cats – guess I'm approaching "hoarder" status! Looking forward to our next landmark reunion. Stacey is the Facilities Manager at Eden Hall Farm Campus, so we'll be expecting some "special treatment." -- Anita Cadwallader Justinus

Beth is still teaching, and she and her husband Matt have bought some land and are building a new house. My grandson Alex -- age 8 -- drives a small excavader as well as a 4 wheeler. Life is different than when we were young. Hope everyone is doing fine. My best wishes to all." Betsy

"Hi Classmates, Going green is a great idea! Dave and I are still working with Turkish World Outreach (TWO) and are excited about two new leaders appointed within the past month - one a new Field Director who lives in South Africa and the other an Executive Director who will operate from our headquarters in Colorado. Both are excellent and will bring new energy to fulfilling our goal of sharing the Christian gospel with Turks. In our role as recruiters, trainers, counselors, language coaches and assessors, we travel a lot but are based in our original hometown of Albany, NY, after ten years in CO and four years in England. It's good to be back in the northeast and renew old friendships and develop new ones. A close friend and a family member both have chronic diseases so we're especially thankful to be back in the area to serve as caregivers. If you're in upstate New York, it would be great to hear from you."

"Acting as class secretary once again, I have notified members of the Class of 1967 that their news is welcome via email or via this page. The rest of you will have to get busy and send your email addresses to me or to the college. If you insist on postage-mail, they will accept that too. Bottom line is, we want to hear from you. I continue to teach ESOL and Citizenship to those in need of these services in Southeastern MA. One of my students called me while I was vacationing in California last summer to tell me that she passed the Citizenship Test. Needless to say, I celebrated this accomplishment with her over the phone and again when I returned. Kammy McCleery '67
Kammy McCleery continues to love her work helping college students from 17 to 70 to develop effective, professional cover letters, résumés, and all the other employability skills they will need for the rest of their lives. Personally, she is delighted to announce that her son, Christopher Malloy, will be married on July 3rd to a wonderful young woman from Hawthorne, NJ. They met in Newport, RI where he's been stationed and she is a college student and Banquet Captain at Castle Hill Inn & Resort. Another wonderful thing happened last October at Chatham. Kammy joined her former roommate, Meg Sandridge, and the Class of 68 for their reunion and was adopted by them which was cause for tremendous celebration! Saturday afternoon, she conducted the Alumnae Choir for Larry Malfatti, our beloved 'Mr. M,' as part of the Memorial Concert. It was a blessing to reconnect with choir members who were there to honor and remember him. It is a fact that Kammy had a rotten senior year at Chatham and has carried the scars of that experience since graduation only returning when choir functions were involved. This reunion was different. It involved many conversations with the wise, wonderful, and welcoming President Barrazone, and staff members that, along with being adopted by the Class of 68 thanks to Sabra Burdick, led to finally making peace with Chatham and her college career. The cherry on top was Saturday night at the dinner when she met, and sang with, Harold Betters, the master jazz trombonist who headlined at the Encore in Shadyside for many years. While they were talking, she was humming with the music being played by the other members of the group. He asked if she knew 'Georgia' and told her they were going to sing it together. Second thrill of a lifetime in one weekend. They also sang Louis Armstrong's, 'What a Wonderful World.' Pres. Barrazone and others had gathered around and looked as though they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was an amazing night, and one that she will never forget! That's my news, and I'm sticking to it.

"If I had known that retirement was so much fun, I would have done that first! My first grandchild arrived in August 2009 and even though he lives in Los Angeles, I manage to see him often. It's amazing how a new baby energizes a family. This child has met all six of his surviving great grandparents and his 107-yr-old great- (X3)-grand-aunt, all of whom are just thrilled. This probably happened when our own children were born, but we were too busy to notice. As part of my transformation into a country girl, I started some tomato plants from seeds, prompting my daughter to remark, "Who are you, and what have you done with my mother?" "It's been a busy year. I moved my mom, who will be 92 in July, 2010, up to independent living 3.7 miles away from me in early February, 2010. I then got her home, 145 miles away, ready to sell and sold it in April. It just closed at the end of May, the day after I had an appendectomy. At the end of this month, June, 2010, I shall take her to Cleveland for her annual trip to visit friends and relatives. My step-daughter is in the process of moving her almost 82-year-old mother to Lubbock, TX where she lives, and my step-son is now living in Portland where he is working in a brand new restaurant, Irving Street Kitchen in the Pearl District. Ann Firestone Ungar’s play, “Who Is Killing The Great Actresses?”, was produced in Manhattan in December, 2009 at the Looking Glass Theatre. This short piece, a series of cautionary tales about life in the theater, was well received during its 4-performance run. She reports that she deeply enjoyed returning to this theater where her play “Lives of Cells,” a meditation on character as revealed through fragments of cellphone conversations, was presented in 2002. The interaction with the cast, director and crew was particularly gratifying. She hopes now to find a venue for her larger script, “Nude Producer Descending.”

"No, I haven't retired yet, am waiting for Medicare! I am still working as CFO of a continuing care retirement community in Ithaca, NY and loving it. (It's also helping me research my options for later years. If you want some information, please let me know!) I'm also still singing and thoroughly enjoying our community chorus. My sight-reading gets better and better and I still blend like I always did. Matt and I keep working on our 1840's Greek revival home and it keeps getting better and better too! Our grandkids, ages 8, 13, and 15, keep us busy and remind us of days gone by. I've somewhat gotten into Facebook and have found classmates from 1971 (that's when I "really" graduated) but haven't found too many of you, oh class of 1970! "Hi everyone, I am really a resident now of Arizona; I feel cold even when its 70 degrees out side.. I have great news: became a grandma April 2010 to a wonderful boy, Ian Matthew Stein. My daughter, Charla, and her husband, Rob, are just doing great. Michael and I were there in Philadelphia for 3 weeks and loved every minute of it. Never had a boy before and so there were lessons to learn especially when diapering! Can't wait to go back and see him, but for now Skype and webcam will have to do. Rachel is still in NYC. She was laid off last year from the large law firm where she had worked (along with 100 others) but has a new position with AMEX and its a real lifestyle change - home for dinner and no weekend work. I think she likes that. Still have the home care business; running it from AZ with great office support in Pittsburgh. It is three years this May, so hard to believe. Probably will hold on till at least 65 so Medicare can take over. No health issues so fa. Can't complain in that area. Amazing, but all of you are the only ones I can admit my age to with ease. We're all in this together! Reunion is coming up and yes I will attend. Although I'm not actually there to plan any thing, maybe if some of you email me I'll try to reserve us space for a party/dinner etc. Send your ideas: cpm45@aol.com." -- Cynthia Plotkin-Mervis

"In August, 2009, I began a new position with Niagara University as Writing Coordinator. Niagara University is a Catholic Vincentian university whose mission is to help the poor. We have lots of opportunities for students and faculty to help people in surrounding communities in both the U.S. and Canada. I am grateful for full-time work during these economic hard times. In the summer, I administer writing placement tests to all incoming freshmen and teach writing in the NUOP program in the summer to disadvantaged students. During the school year, I train and supervise peer writing tutors who work with any student enrolled at Niagara as well as teach Critical Literacy to those students provisionally admitted who have poor reading and writing skills. After following my husband around the country, I am planted here until I retire. Michael has been unable to find paying work for over a year, so it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen any time soon. Since the people I work with are wonderful, it’s a pleasure to go to work. My greatest joy in 2009 was the birth of our first grandchild, Giacomo Salerno. Since Catherine and family live in New Jersey, we go visit whenever we can. This spring I have been invited to teach her third grade class how to make jam like the Dutch did in New Amsterdam for a social studies unit. It should be lots of fun. Another fun pastime is quilting. I exhibited quilts at our quilt show last fall and continue to make quilts for Catherine, Michael III (our son) and children of various friends and family members. Quilting keeps my creative juices flowing. I am on Facebook, so feel free to friend me. You’ll find a picture of Charlie, the son of Catherine’s best friend, on a “Little Red Hen” quilt I made for him. Despite money being tight, life is good. Michael and I live close to both of our families. Even though our children live far away, we get to see them several times a year and via Facebook." -- Martha Fix Krupa

"Hi, everyone, Thanks to Annie Wall for keeping in touch - what fun to see those pictures again! They did bring back memories! I am about to retire. I've been teaching high school French and Spanish and am ready to move on. Teaching has been wonderful and stressful and frustrating and rewarding and lots of other things. I'm exhausted! Now, I'll be able to ride my horse, read books, see movies, take long walks, visit friends, and so on. I would like to do a little travelling as well. My husband, Jim Lorriman, is a woodturner and has received some awards recently. We went to Cheung Ju, South Korea for a big show last fall that he was juried in to. It was so exciting there. Their attitudes toward craft are very different there. Our daughters are both working - one is in Boston, the other in Toronto. My last day is June 30th! Take care," --Lisa G.

We have 2 puppies (seemed like a good idea at the time), which limits the spontaneous travel that we thought we would be doing here in Florida. I do all the same things as before--golf, cards, mahj, sewing, volunteering, etc., and wish I saw more of my 4 'gbabes' who are getting big and happy to see me for about 5 minutes before they want to go back to their stuff. "Has it really been 40 years? It's hard to believe I'm about to start my 35th year at The University of Iowa and Nick his 20th at Coe College. So far we've not been too tempted by early retirement offers because working with undergraduates continues to be rewarding. Current students are fascinated that we went off to college with manual typewriters and Corrasable Bond paper; phoned home once a week using the pay phone down the hall; had curfews... We've visited family in Philadelphia and Halifax, Nova Scotia, and are planning to return to London for our 30th wedding anniversary. I enjoy volunteering with the National Academic Advising Association as a mentor in its Emerging Leaders Program and locally with the Rape Victim Advocacy Program."

Kim recently reconnected with Trinka (Blickle) Pellacchia, one of her three junior year roommates. They had fun comparing memories and catching up over lunch. After almost ten years of driving at least an hour each way to work, Kim's recent change of jobs gave her the gift of extra sleeping time in the mornings. "Still enjoying retirement, living in Sydney, Australia, and doing a bit of consulting in Higher Education Policy here and abroad. We also live in Belgium part of the year, where I have a great piano teacher, and we get to concerts. We had two more grandchildren in the past five months, bringing the total to thirteen. I know how lucky I am with such a large family, mostly living on the east coast of OZ. I really enjoyed reading about Cookie Ungar's theatre adventures. "We are feeling the sands of time slipping all too quickly and many sites to see. This April we had an amazing trip to China with a small group (5 others all Canadian). It was fun traveling incognito under a Canadian flag! A conference in Colorado Springs, followed 5 days later by a nephew's wedding in Las Vegas, prompted us to drive through Colorado and Utah and see wonderful national parks we had not seen. It is always gratifying to see that the US has saved some truly remarkable lands. We are now back home with house guests from Finland - our Rotary exchange student from 22 years ago who has joined us with her two sons, ages 10 and 13. Since English is started in the 4th grade in Finland, they are bravely trying out their new language. They certainly would not want to rely on our Finnish! This has all been a bit of a distraction from my pro bono efforts to protect water quality in the Poconos. A ten year project is about to come to a (hopefully successful) conclusion in the next few months. "The spring of 2010 commemorated not only the 40th year since our graduation but the 40 years that Tom and I have been married. On June 6, 1970 we were married in my hometown of Kent, Ohio. Guardsmen were still marching the streets at night and there was a curfew. Those were tumultuous times in Kent, and we were in the very middle of it. The marriage, fortunately, has not proved tumultuous. We celebrated with our family on Grand Cayman. It was a lovely family time together and just what we wanted to enjoy our anniversary. Those 40 years went fast for us. Since we dated exclusively during the Chatham years, the 40th anniversary of our graduation means a lot to both of us. Cheers, fellow grads!"

Karen Gamble Bandy has begun a complete overhaul of her life. In November 2009 she closed her business, sold her house, stored everything, and took off in the car with her (newly retired) husband, Herb. They have been visiting relatives and looking for a place to live that is as agreeable as the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, but has a lower cost of living. Her travels have included stays in Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina, and, most interesting, two months in India. The round of visits this summer and fall includes Kansas, Iowa, and Brazil. By next November she hopes to choose a place to put down roots. Unfortunately, the current schedule says that she will still be in Brazil during Reunion Week. Happy Reunion to the class of 1970! "On May 1, 2010, my mother Ruth passed away as a result of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 86. For the last nine years, ever since my Dad died, I've spent a good part of every day making sure that Mom had the best care possible, that she was physically healthy, that she felt safe and unafraid, that she was well groomed and treated with dignity. I must admit, I micro managed every aspect of her life! Between that and working full time as an assistant public defender in Miami, there was very little time left for anything else; most areas of my own life were badly neglected. But the benefits of caring for my mother were tremendous, and I don't regret having had that responsibility. I got to know her better, got to know my sister and my family -- who helped me so much -- and learned that I am a patient and nurturing person who can feel pride and joy over the accomplishments of a child -- which is what my mother became. My sadness at never having had a child has been somewhat assuaged. Now, at the age of 60, I will pick up the pieces of my life and move ahead."

Our 21 year-old daughter is graduating college this month and our 10 year-old son is completing 4th grade. We have travelled a lot this year: Costa Rica, Jamaica, a few US cities. Stayed at a great resort at Stowe this winter for a week and this summer we'll be in Romania for 2-1/2 weeks, as well as our annual week-long pilgrimage to Tanglewood and the environs. Have done more public speaking this year. Still work part-time as a clinical/forensic psychologist. Usually it's found in professional hockey or rugby players, or rarely pregnant women, but not fitting either of those groups, it has decided to visit her anyway. Still have my psychology practice (psychotherapy and organizational consulting) while also starting a green cemetery with my husband, Pete. My daughter is working on a PhD in Art History at Northwestern and my son completed his freshman year at Pitt - Bradford. I enjoy following Chatham buddies on Facebook."

Son Nick is still in Tokyo working as a supervisor in an English language school. Thank goodness for Skype! Daughter Emily is in DC working on a project for NOVO Foundation to alleviate violence against women and children. Husband Dave is still working (luckily!). Barbara Wilhelm has had a year of major changes. First, her husband of 27 years, Frank Perrone, died suddenly while running in August 2009. As a result, she has taken on the entire medical practice in Farmington and left the Uniontown office to her husband’s partner. She still rounds at the nursing homes and has taken Frank’s position as medical director. In other news, son Derek is now 21 and a junior in Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence. Shane (18) skipped his senior year of high school to enter college last fall. Barbara has just released her second novel, “Double Helix: DNA Never Lies.” She enjoys being class secretary, looks forward to reading everyone’s news and wishes all a good 2010.

Alain and Dianne are enjoying life and doing well. They attended their son's graduation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the end of May. Charles was awarded a PhD in Mathematics. Their two daughters, Christine and Julie, were also there for the occasion. On the short term, Charles will stay on in New York state to work at a cancer research institute. Christine is a forensic psychologist, teaching college in Campbellton, New Brunswick. Julie studies and works in I.T. As are many in their generation, Alain and Dianne are looking forward to retirement and, to that end, have bought a little lake-side cottage in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.

Barbara accomplished her Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation in January, 2010. This year, she has also taken over the helm of the financial advisory practice started by her mother, Nancy T. Brown, in 1970. She continues to work with multiple generations of families, and can now state that there are four families with which she works with the fourth generation. Her son, Derek Brown, has joined Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and is building his own practice in the downtown Pittsburgh office. Her other two sons, Robert and Walter, are progressing through grade school very nicely. Barbara's husband, Leslie, has started his own practice as a Patent Agent this year. Through all of the hullabaloo that life brings, they are planning trips to Boston, Denver and San Francisco this year to pursue various interests in history, skiing and oceanography. Barbara is also trying to remodel her home to be as "green" and LEED-certified as possible. Feel free to contact her with "green" ideas, as her research continues.

This year Rebekah welcomed her first daughter (a Virgo like herself), Adrianna Domina Emma Mancini, and hasn't had a moment to pause. When she was in Vegas for the 2009 Chatham group 30 Birthday Bash, she never imagined a baby a year later. Adrianna is as much a dominant, strong and versatile female as her name infers. Rebekah continues to manage the oldest alternative to incarceration programs for juvenile offenders in New York State and is happy to have expanded program services to include non court mandated services these last 3 years. She enjoyed her shower in Pittsburgh with Chatham alumns (Weimer-Dahl, Cappella, Casciato (McKendree), Walker (Waszkiewicz), Miller, Anastas (Millward), Geho, Happel, Williams (Duncan), and others. She also loved seeing Ms. Sickles and Jeffreys and Maholtz-Zedacker at the Miller-Acquaro wedding. She and Joe just bought their first home 20 minutes from Jersey shore points (and yes, they have a guest room) and visitors are welcome. She will miss her regular visits with Trinity Zang but knows that Regan will come play with baby Adrianna. Please email her at bekahheilman@hotmail.com.

In August, they made the move back to Pittsburgh to start their new jobs. Christina had a very interesting 2009. In April, she was diagnosed with cancer and then 7 days later she found out that she and Vince were expecting baby #2! Talk about a roller coaster of emotions! Fortunately, Christina was able to have surgery to remove her cancer when she was 21 weeks pregnant. The cancer is ALL GONE and the pregnancy continued without any issue. Vince, Christina, and Jacob welcomed Benjamin Anthony Mars on Friday, December 11, 2009. Benjamin arrived at 5:19pm weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces. Jacob is a fantastic big brother and Benjamin is such a sweet little guy! (Guess she won't have any kids attending Chatham)! Christina will be back at work in May 2010; until then, she's truly enjoying maternity leave and coaching the boys' varsity tennis team. She still teaches Biology. In July 2009, she completed the necessary coursework for her Administrators' license. Now she is just waiting to see what type of assistant principal positions are available in the near future. Christina has enjoyed seeing Chatham classmates and reconnecting with others via Facebook. Best of luck to everyone in 2010. If you're in the Cleveland area, please stop by for a visit! Looking forward to Reunion in October!

Eileen Kinch '04
Eileen Kinch, English major 2004 and Earlham M.A. in Writing and Divinity just published her first book: The ESR Story: 1985-2010. Below is a description of the story: In his 25th anniversary history of the school, Wil Cooper described the launch of Earlham School of Religion as "A Quaker dream come true." In this 50th anniversary edition, Eileen Kinch offers a fresh, interpretive history of this dream's unfolding during its second quarter of a century. Eileen skillfully identifies persistent themes in the school's history, places them within the context of tensions among North American Friends, and describes their effects on the school's life and health. The result is an honest, yet joyful, narrative that captures the success of a seminary many thought could never survive. Sandy also got to visit Carol Dougherty VonSchenkhof (’64) before heading home. Carol and Sandy have been the best of friends all their lives, though geography prevents them from seeing each other as often as they would like. It was a treat.

Becky has been employed at Giant Eagle's Corporate Office since February 2009, analyzing data and implementing a chargeback system for the IS department. She and her husband, Greg [and (almost 2 year old) Arianna] are getting ready to welcome a second baby to the family in December. In February, they bought their first home in Tarentum. It has been good to get back to Pittsburgh living and enjoying time with her Chatham sisters, especially Jessica Jones Szalla ’97 and Amanda Reinhardt ’05. For the second year in a row, she volunteered with Jessica for Monica Ritter’s MayMester Career Prep class conducting mock interviews. Getting back on campus always feels like coming home. She is very much looking forward to time in OBX in September with Amanda (and Jen Grab ’07) when the A-Team will help pull-off one of the most memorable weddings ever.

Kristan is still working hard on trying to find a teaching position within the Pittsburgh area. It's has been five years since she's received her MAT, but still no luck with a permanant job. However, she has enjoyed her years at Clairton, where she has taught grades 3,4 and also kindergarten. Kristan and her boyfriend Jeff enjoy spending their time riding their Harley on back country roads and traveling to his parent's vacation home in Rehoboth Delaware. Kristan can't believe it's been almost ten years...it seems like yesterday. Anyone for a volleyball reunion? Drop an email.

In November of 2009 Joyce's husband accepted a position in Madrid, Spain and in three weeks they packed 8 bags and called friends and an auction house to carry away acquisitions of the last few decades, storing a few things for later analysis. Since then, Joyce has been learning Spanish and the city of Madrid and would love to hear from visiting friends.

In October of 2009 Ann was able to make the move to Santa Barbara, after 36 years in LA. Ann is greatly enjoying being out of a major metropolitan area, and spring this year was especially spectacular after abundant winter rains. Santa Barbara squeezed between mountains and ocean and is simply gorgeous. And she lives here!

"Before commencement 2010, I applied to the MSCP (Master of Science in Counseling Psychology) program in the spring of 2009 and will complete the program in summer 2011 (I guess I couldn't say goodbye to Chatham Just yet)! I hope to pursue a Psy.D (doctor of psychology) in clinical child and adolescent psychology. The next step in my life is to develop a relationship with the essence of my being, to become further cemented in who I've become as a "world ready" woman. I hope the same for you." Paz y amor!
