Campaign for Chatham .: Challenges Met

Challenge #1: $800,000 Kresge Challenge for the Science Complex. In December 1998, the Kresge Foundation issued an $800,000 Challenge grant to Chatham requiring that the College add $1.2 Million to the Campaign by June 30, 2000. The College met and exceeded that benchmark and received the generous gift designated for the Science Complex and added Kresge Atrium (right) to the named spaces in the building.

Challenge #2: The $750,000 Capstone Challenge Following the success of the Kresge Challenge, an anonymous donor came forward to issue a $750,000 challenge grant to help bring the Campaign to $30 Million. Chatham alumnae, graduate alumni, trustees, friends, members of the campus community and corporate and foundation donors rallied once again and helped to raise the necessary $29,250,000 by the June 29, 2001 deadline. The College exceeded all expectations and closed the Campaign on June 30, 2001 having raised a total of $31.7 Million. The $750,000 was designated to technology initiatives at the College.

Challenge #3: $800,000 Kresge Challenge for the Athletic and Fitness Center. In March 2003, The Kresge Foundation issued Chatham its second challenge grant in 5 years to support the construction of the new athletic facility. Through the generosity of alumnae and friends, the College exceeded its fundraising goal by over $400,000 coming to a successful conclusion on October 1, 2004.

Challenge #4: $200,000 Annual Fund Challenge – Inspired by the potential for another $800,000 Kresge Challenge, four women stepped forward in spring 2003, to pledge $50,000 each for a Challenge pool for the 2003-2004 Annual Fund to encourage new and increased unrestricted gifts to the College and to help meet the $1.3 Million goal. Fundraising exceeded $1.3 Million and the first hurdle toward releasing the $800,000 Kresge Challenge for the Athletic and Fitness Center was down.
