Ways to Give

Thank you for your interest in making a gift to Chatham University. There are many ways to make a gift and depending on the asset given and the gift arrangement selected, a donor can generally expect to obtain some or all of the following benefits:

  • Fulfill philanthropic goals
  • Reduce income tax
  • Avoid capital-gains tax on gifts of long-term appreciated property
  • Retain a stream of payments for life for the donor and/or other beneficiaries (in the case of a gift annuity)
  • Increase spendable income
  • Possibly eliminate a portion of your federal estate tax

Guide to the ways and benefits of making a gift to Chatham University.

OUTRIGHT GIFTS
Outright gifts are immediate contributions to the University and often include cash, securities and real estate.

  1. Cash Gifts: A gift of cash is available for immediate use by the University. Please send a check or money order, payable to Chatham University to the address below.
  2. Credit card gifts: One of the easiest and most flexible ways to make a gift to the University is with a credit card. Chatham University accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. You can make an online gift through our secure online gift form. Or, if you prefer, print our credit card form and fax it to (412) 365-1610. You may also call our toll free and confidential GiftLine at 1-866-PCW-CHAT to make a credit card gift. Please be sure to identify the project or program to benefit from your gift.
  3. Pledge your support: Pledges to the Annual Fund are due by June 30th of the current fiscal year. Pledge periods for capital and special projects vary. Current commitments to the Athletic and Fitness Center are due by June 30, 2008.
  4. Marketable securities: Gifts of appreciated long-term securities, including stocks, bonds and mutual fund shares, may generate very favorable tax benefits for the donor. At the time the gift is made, the donor may receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of such securities if owned for more than 12 months. To make a gift of securities, please use one of the three methods listed below or contact Gary A. McKillop, Director of Development Information Systems at Chatham University at (412) 365-2731.

    ELECTRONIC TRANSFER
The easiest method of transferring securities electronically is via DTC (Depository Trust Company) into Chatham University’s account with Parker Hunter, a division of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC.

    • Please instruct your broker/agent to transfer securities to:

      Parker/Hunter, Janney Montgomery Scott LLC
      DTC # 0374
      Account # 2014-7404
      FBO Chatham University
      Attention: Cindy Pastin (412) 562-7935

    • Instruct your broker/agent to send a letter to the Office of Institutional Advancement (address below) confirming the transfer, indicating the your name and address, security description, quantity, purpose or designation of gift.

    TRANSFER OF PHYSICALLY HELD SECURITIES
For donors who wish to have shares transferred to Chatham University:

    • send a letter accompanying the securities identifying the security, quantity and designation via registered mail to Chatham at the address below. Security certificates should not be executed
    • Complete a stock/bond power and mail under separate cover to the above Chatham address. The power must be executed (signed) identically to the registered security.
    • Fill in “Chatham University” in the “sell/assign/transfer” section.
    • Please do not fill in the “Attorney to transfer” section.

  5. Gifts of Tangible Personal Property/In-Kind Gifts: Gifts-in-kind are non-cash gifts of tangible property. If the use of the contributed property is related to the exempt purposes of the charitable organization (i.e., a painting to a museum), the donor is entitled to a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property -- subject to the 30% ceiling and carryover. If the use of the gifted property is unrelated to the purposes of Chatham University, the donor is entitled to a deduction only for the donor's basis in the property. Please contact Samantha Swift, director of development and planned giving, (412-365-1652) for more information on tangible personal property/in-kind gifts.
  6. Donate Frequent Flyer Miles:
If you have been looking for that special way to help Chatham University and have been watching your frequent flyer miles add up, here's your chance to put them good use. Donating your accrued frequent flyer miles could help students, staff, faculty, or volunteers travel to help fulfill the mission of the University.

    Bank Miles for Chatham
Notify the College when you're ready to make your gift and then do one or both of the actions below depending on your airline:

    • Assign a pin number to a determined number of frequent flyer miles that the University could use at their discretion at participating airlines.
    • Order a ticket in the persons name determined by Chatham.

** Please note that these donations are subject to the limitations and regulations of the individual airlines.
To make this donation and/or to get further details, please contact Gary McKillop or by phone at 412-365-2731.

  7. Corporate Matching Gifts: Many companies will match contributions made by employees to their colleges or universities. Typically, it's a dollar-for-dollar match, but some companies offer a two-for-one match...sometimes even three-for-one! Not sure if your company matches? Visit the CASE Foundation Website and enter your company into their search engine to see if you can double or triple the impact of your contribution to Chatham University. And, as a donor, you will be recognized for the total amount of the gift.

Once you’ve verified that your company will match your gift, please check with your Human Resources office to obtain a matching gift form, fill out the top portion, and mail it to Chatham University along with your gift. We will then verify receipt of your gift and send it to your company for processing. It’s that simple! If you need any additional help, please call (412) 365-1673 or send an email request to matchinggifts@chatham.edu. We encourage you to take advantage of this great employee benefit and thank you for your generosity to Chatham University!
