Planned Giving
   Leaving a Legacy

Kevin Cartwright, Chair of The Dilworth Society
As Chair of The Dilworth Society, the College’s planned giving society, one of my responsibilities is to educate alumnae about the benefits of making a planned gift to Chatham. Planned giving is a unique opportunity for donors to make a profound difference in the future of the College while often benefiting themselves and their families. Over the years, alumnae and friends have given gifts of all types and sizes that have enhanced the College in so many ways: Chatham’s achievements in Keep the Vision Splendid—The Campaign for Chatham University, the recent Athletic and Fitness Center fundraising campaign and The Kresge Challenge have been due in large part to several generous planned gifts, ranging from $10,000 to $4 million.

Life income gifts, such as annuities and trusts, have allowed donors to make meaningful gifts to Chatham and receive charitable deductions and income. The Dilworth Society, Chatham’s planned giving society, was founded in 1994 when then Trustee S. Murray Rust, Jr. established the first charitable gift annuity with the College. More recently, Betsy Lytle Suatoni ’59 and her husband Frank realized that a gift annuity was a wonderful way to make a significant gift to Chatham’s endowment while at the same time gaining from a tax deduction and receiving quarterly revenue. Bequests have played an integral role in Chatham’s history as well. A bequest of $10,000 from Joseph Dilworth, a member of the College’s first Board of Trustees, established the fund with which the original Dilworth Hall was erected. More recently, Elizabeth Munn ’31 bequeathed her entire estate, over $3 million, to ensure that students would have the same educational opportunities as she; her gift not only established the Elizabeth Jenkins Munn Scholarship Fund but also assisted Chatham in raising over $31 million for the Campaign.

These are just a few examples of the many ways that past planned gifts have impacted the College. If you would like more information regarding gift planning, Samantha Swift, Director of Development & Planned Giving, would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have. She can be reached at 412-365-1652 or plannedgiving@chatham.edu.

Planned Giving at
Chatham University

Planned giving refers to the process of making a charitable gift through a bequest intention, by establishing an annuity or a trust, or by utilizing real estate, an insurance policy, or retirement funds to fulfill your philanthropic and financial goals. A planned gift makes the most of your assets in ways that will benefit you, your loved ones, and Chatham—leaving a legacy that you know will make a difference for many generations to come.

Some of the advantages of making a planned gift to Chatham include:
• the ability to positively impact the future of Chatham University
• significant tax savings
• good payout rates
• greater diversification of investments
• reduced estate tax

Chatham has a full range of opportunities for planned giving that are described in this Website. You can learn more about the different kinds of planned gifts by clicking on the Types of Gifts links to the right.
