Students Success Stories

Casey Pawl Casey Pawl ‘09
Major: Biology

Casey is the 2006-2007 recipient of the Glenda Rich DeBroff Memorial Scholarship. Casey, a second-year student majoring in Biology, received the award to support her Chatham Abroad Maymester trip to Belize and Guatemala.

When asked what receiving this award means, Casey states: “It was nice. It’s hard to describe. It meant that I could really get everything that you possibly could out of visiting Belize and Guatemala. The trip was AMAZING! Everyone should go there sometime in their life and experience it. They are such beautiful countries.”

While in Belize and Guatemala, Casey studied how exotic animals from that region live and act. She also participated in a service project at the Belize Botanical Gardens. This fall, she will share her experience through a presentation to the Chatham community.

Casey, like many Chatham women, takes advantage of the various opportunities available to her on campus. She participates on the swim team, and acts as historian of Beta Beta Beta, the national biology honor society. She is also a member of the Chatham Activities Board, the Jewish and Muslim student associations, the International Student Association, and the Chemistry society. In her spare time, Casey also enjoys playing soccer and competing in dog shows. In the past she has also volunteered her time at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. After graduation, Casey hopes to obtain her degree in veterinary medicine.
Cassandra Yusz Cassandra Yusz ‘09
Major: Exercise Science

“I chose Chatham because it seemed to have everything I was looking for. The classes are small, the science department is very strong, the campus is beautiful, and I have access to everything that Pittsburgh offers.”

Cassandra is one of three recipients of the 2006-2007 Vira I. Heinz Scholarship for Study Abroad award. Cassandra used the award money to help fund her Maymester trip to Kalatura, Sri Lanka.

While there, she lived with a host family and assisted physicians in local clinics and observed traditional ayurvedic medicine. Cassandra plans to go into the medical field, so this experience enhanced her goals by providing her with hands-on medical volunteering. She is most interested in obstetrics and gynecology, particularly how a country so different from the U.S. cares and treats women and their children. Upon her return to Chatham, she will share her experience through a presentation to the Chatham community.

When asked what receiving this award means, she replied, “Winning the Vira Heinz award meant that I could travel without the thought of money constantly in the back of my mind. It eliminated any doubt about whether or not the trip would be financially possible. Traveling to Sri Lanka has made me a more mature, understanding, and knowledgeable person. I recommend doing something like this to any student who even has the slightest interest in traveling.”

In addition to maintaining a 3.8 QPA, Cassandra participates in several campus organizations, including being a member of Peer Educators at Chatham in Health (PEACHES), and the Golden Z, which unites outstanding college students from around the world in the spirit of service and leadership. She also helps out as a student worker in the Health Services Department. After obtaining her undergraduate degree, Cassandra plans to obtain her degree in medicine.
